At SIDE, I was tasked with designing and building a suite of tools to enhance productivity, reduce time and costs for our studio engineer departments across the globe. This suite currently includes a studio export tool, a batch file renaming tool & a tool to convert txt files into workable EDL CSV files, for use across multiple departments.
The Problem:
In studio, engineers spend so much time manually doing exports, generating EDL's or renaming incorrect files. My challenge was to design and build a user friendly, efficient toolset to help streamline these problems.
The Solution:
After spending time researching directly with the team, I knew exactly what the pain points were and how I had to go about building these tools. With plenty of iterations and feedback, I was able to complete three standalone apps that have increased efficiency and productivity greatly.
Code vs Design
As I was responsible for the design and the build of these standalone apps, I decided to build the UI design whilst I was constructing the code, all while adhering to the existing brand guidelines that SIDE have established.
This was because I knew that the functionality would develop a lot as I got more feedback and found more effective ways of building it. My designs in figma were going alongside my Python build and I was able to continually iterate until I got to my final design.
